Born on March 9th 1970, Martin Osborne Johnson OBE, England’s Grand Slam captain and most capped lock forward, commands respect throughout the entire rugby-playing world. Born in Solihull, Engand, he is coach Clive Woodward’s automatic choice to lead the side and is the only player ever to have captained the British Lions on two tours, in 1997 and 2001. Having succeeded Lawrence Dallaglio as England captain against Australia in June 1999 he has since led England to their clean sweep of New Zealand, Australia and South Africa in November 2002, and to last season’s Six Nations Grand Slam title. His inspirational leadership was also paramount when England beat New Zealand 15-13 in Wellington back in June 2003 and, a week later, when they completed their tour of Australia. Dubbed `Captain Colossus’ he’s an uncompromising player on the pitch but a quiet man off it.
