DATE OF BIRTH: 11th February 1936
KEY FACTS: In 1955, Burt was drafted by the Baltimore Colts professional football team before an accident ended his sports career. He appeared on the stage, then worked as a stuntman on TV and in movies, before landing his first regular TV appearance on Riverboat.His movie breakthrough came in the 70s with John Boorman's drama Deliverance, pushing him into the front rank of Hollywood stars.  Burt appeared in The Longest Yard, Smokey and the Bandit, and Hooper, then moved on to black humour in The End, before making his feature directorial debut Gator, in which he also starred.
He increasingly devoted time to directing and teaching at the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theatre and Institute for Theatre Training in Florida, then returned to the big screen in 1993 with the action comedy Cop and a Half.
Burt's career received a major boost from Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights, in which he played porn mogul Jack Horner, and received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination.
