Gerard James Butler was born on November 13, 1969, in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1970, his family moved to Montreal, Canada, where Gerard spent a couple of years before returning to Paisley, Scotland with his mother. Young Gerry developed an interest in acting early on and joined the Scottish Youth Theatre, where he appeared in a production of Oliver! when he was 12 years old. In 1997, Gerry landed his first film role as Billy Connolly's younger brother in Mrs. Brown, and followed this up with a brief part in the 1997 James Bond instalment Tomorrow Never Dies. In 2007, Gerry starred as Spartan King Leonidas in 300, an adaptation of Frank Miller's historical novel set during the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C.
